Andreas Merkel’s answer to the question: what developments in the textile industry make you optimistic about 2025?

The last few years have not been easy: supply chains were massively disrupted during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Many companies have increased their stocks out of concern for their ability to deliver – an understandable but expensive measure that has led to rising prices and inflation. 2024 was then characterised by destocking and weak consumer demand. A rather ‘toxic’ mixture that led to weak sales across the entire textile value chain.

This makes the start of 2025 all the more pleasing. We at Gebr. Otto got off to a surprisingly good start – mainly thanks to unexpected large orders from customers who had empty warehouses and thus suddenly high demand. At the same time, we are seeing increasing demand from regional customers who value a local value chain with the highest quality and sustainability. That encourages us: we are continuing to invest in solar and renewable energies as well as in efficient machines and technologies. I also believe politicians have a duty: Europe needs smart framework conditions and must not stifle the industry with ever new regulations and bureaucracy. It is unacceptable that thousands of packages of Cheap Goods from the Far East arrive here by air freight every day without any restrictions or controls. We cannot remain competitive in this way.

Despite these challenges, I am positive about 2025. We at Gebr. Otto are motivated and committed to our customers. We want to continue on our path together.
