A woman goes her own way

Claudia Lanius founded the sustainable fashion label Lanius twenty years ago, at a time when fair fashion was still ridiculed as “hippy eco-fashion” and was right at the bottom of the good-taste rankings.

“It all started with an idea: Making fashion whilst thinking about the consequences and creating beauty with a clear conscience. That was back in 1999 and I still follow this vision to this day.” Claudia Lanius © Thekla Ehling

The designer was determined to change these perceptions by building on her five years of experience at THC – The Hanf Company. It was here that she had her first breakthrough, successfully launching a pure hemp collection with pioneering spirit and a fine feel for fashion.

For the past twenty years, Lanius has been synonymous with fair and organic fashion: Based in the southern district of Cologne, Claudia Lanius and her team of twenty focus every day on successfully combining environmentally friendly materials and fair working conditions with feminine silhouettes and perfect fit.

The current spring/summer collection 2019 marks the company’s 20th anniversary. Since its launch in 1999, Lanius has created 40 fair fashion collections. Of the many sustainable materials used, hemp has a special standing at Lanius, assuming a leading role in every collection.

In an interview with textile network Claudia Lanius takes a look back at the past 20 years.
