Vaude completes PFAS phase-out
The summer 2025 collection marks the end of Vaude's more than 15-year transition away from PFAS. All product groups are now manufactured without these substances, which are considered harmful to human health.
Vaude has eliminated PFAS from every segment of its assortment. This includes weatherproof apparel, backpacks, sleeping bags, footwear and waterproof tents. The change spans the entire outdoor portfolio. For textile suppliers and manufacturers, the breadth of this shift shows how extensively PFAS-free solutions can already be applied in functional products.
Development work as a decisive factor
Replacing PFAS proved to be a demanding task. For many years, the outdoor industry relied on these chemicals as a technical standard, particularly for long-lasting weather protection. Vaude describes the transition as a long-term effort. Research into alternative materials played a central role. Laboratory and field tests were carried out to ensure the required performance could be achieved without PFAS.
Implications for product development
The completed transition demonstrates that PFAS-free materials can meet functional requirements in demanding applications. Vaude's experience underlines that performance levels can be maintained when extensive testing and systematic adjustments are planned. For textile and apparel companies, this offers an indication of how alternative material strategies may be integrated into future product lines.
A long-term strategic process
The phase-out was initiated more than 15 years ago. The long timeframe between the decision and full implementation highlights the complexity of replacing established chemical systems. Vaude describes the move as a strategic decision pursued over many years.
Antje von Dewitz, Managing Director of Vaude, emphasises this commitment. "It shows that high-performance weather protection is possible without relying on harmful forever chemicals. Reaching this milestone is a major achievement for Vaude – and the result of close collaboration and strong commitment from many colleagues and partners.”
Outlook for further transitions
The completed phase-out illustrates the scale of development work required to replace PFAS entirely. At the same time, it shows that viable alternatives are available and already used in series production. Companies considering their own transition can gain orientation from the steps and stages demonstrated through this process.
