Dortex is specialized in customizable textile labels, the products are used, for example, as labels on clothing and accessories or as festival and admission ribbons. Also, professional business cards, doorbell plates or pendants can be created. Due to the different materials, shapes and sizes, the areas of application are very diverse.

Elke Dohmann, Marketing Director at Dortex:

“Our configurator is the heart of the website. With it, personalizing our labels becomes possible in the first place. The material, size and color are just three of many aspects that can be customized.” Depending on the product type, users can also choose between different textured backgrounds as well as use any shape with the help of an upload function. Lettering and the insertion of motifs and logos are also possible. This creates a highly individualized product that is perfectly tailored to the needs of international customers. End consumers can express their personality in the best possible way, while commercial customers can implement their brand design precisely.

Individual labels, ribbons and tags are the core business of the family business from Dortmund. This was not always the case, as Managing Director Burkhard Dohmann reports: “At first, the focus was on the technical redevelopment of computer-aided electronic controls for ribbon weaving. This enabled us to develop numerous new, elegant and modern fonts for woven textile labels.”

Twelve years after the company had been founded in 1986, Dortex sold its labels online for the first time.

Peter Dohmann, who runs the business in the second generation together with his father Burkhard:

“At the end of 2019, we opened our production hall in Dortmund-Bodelschwingh. This has created even shorter distances in a more efficient production, but at the same time we are committed to the Dortmund location and the region.”

  • Dortex produces exclusively in Germany, works with regional weaving mills and thus, creates transparency and security in production – a special feature in the globalized textile industry.

Committed to the region and sustainability

Sustainability and commitment are particularly important to the medium-sized company. For years, Dortex has supported creative minds from the crafts and design sector with its own design award; as a partner of the StartUpDay at the Creativa trade fair, Dortex also offers valuable input to aspiring entrepreneurs from the sector on how to shape their own business. With its company headquarters, created in collaboration with the renowned architect Marcus Patrias, Dortex has been focusing on climate-friendly living and working conditions since 2017. In addition, the reduction of plastic in production and logistics is on the agenda. “At the moment, we are working on integrating new innovative materials into the webshop,” says marketing manager Elke Dohmann. “The socially responsible extraction of the raw material with consistently high quality and freedom from harmful substances is particularly important to us.”
