ORW technology to produce multi-axial fabrics

The Open Reed Weave (ORW) technology makes it possible to feed additional threads into the weaving process using special thread guides.

The yarn guides can be moved horizontally on a profile via linear drives in a pattern-controlled manner. The additional pattern threads create a weft effect on the fabric surface that can be freely controlled. The ORW technique is therefore especially suitable to produce multi-axial fabrics for technical textiles.

The arrangement of two independently driven axes for the additional pattern threads makes it possible to weave additional threads into a basic fabric in any diagonal direction as 3rd and 4th thread systems. In this way, the position of the diagonal threads is adapted to the direction of the forces acting on them. In addition to the possibility of weaving additional thread systems into a basic fabric across the entire fabric width, ORW technology is also suited for doing this only partially, in order to integrate required reinforcements at certain points of the fabric.

 The ORW Technology:

  • two additional thread systems that can be shifted across the weave width
  • shifting of the multiaxial threads via laying needles (max. 30cm)
  • binding of the multiaxial threads by lowering the needles
  • lowering is made possible by open reed gaps

Locally reinforced fabrics can be produced in one step, waste is reduced as well as the number of process steps, and quality assurance is improved. Reinforcements can also be made more flexible. It offers new areas of application such as perforation, notch effect, punctual force transmission or for load belts.
