“CaRMA” research project

Bavarian research foundation Bayerische Forschungsstiftung is pouring EUR 492,700 into the development of innovative multi-material non-wovens.

The project will see Fraunhofer IGCV collaborate with the companies Autefa Solutions, GMA-Werkstoffprüfung and Kalex Engineering. The objective of the project known as “CaRMA” is to develop innovative non-wovens by taking a multi-material approach, paving the way for the low-cost production of fibre composite components in high-performing lightweight designs.

 Christian Egger, CEO Autefa Solutions: “The application of multi-material non-wovens made from carbon is pioneering. Carbon achieves extremely high levels of stability and tensile strength, it is very lightweight and highly stable even in small areas. We’re combining these carbon properties with the typical benefits of non-wovens. Together with the other partners in the consortium, we are bringing experience and expertise to the CaRMA project with a view to developing fibre composite parts for use in industrial lightweight design.”

 Recycled carbon fibres are to be integrated in non-woven materials together with secondary fibre components such as natural fibres, fibre glass or aramid fibres. This will pave the way for innovative non-woven structures that can be adapted to the required application in terms of their mechanical, thermal and electrical properties.
