Smart Textiles Forum Highlights Key Developments
Around 90 experts gathered to explore medical and safety-related applications of smart textiles. Ten specialist presentations, a company tour at Bauerfeind AG and an accompanying exhibition offered hands-on insights into current developments.
Medical applications in the spotlight
The first thematic block of the Smart Textiles Forum focused on textile-based solutions that support therapeutic and diagnostic processes. Presentations included a garment for the treatment of neonatal jaundice, a sensor designed for the early detection of atrial fibrillation and a glove developed to help relieve chronic pain caused by rheumatic diseases. All examples demonstrated how textile structures can be combined with integrated electronics to make medical applications more accessible in everyday use.
Sensor technologies for critical environments
The Resilience block examined textile technologies that can provide reliable information in extreme situations. A textile-based blood sensor enables the differentiation of various bodily fluids and can detect blood loss. This was complemented by an AI-supported sensor system designed to monitor vital signs, movement and location data of emergency personnel. Both developments underline the role of textile electronics in enhancing situational awareness for safety-critical operations.
Electronic functions in work and protective wear
The third block addressed smart solutions for occupational safety. YKK Europe Limited presented fasteners with integrated electronic functions that can be used as switches and incorporated directly into textile systems. A heated glove for use in cryogenic environments was also introduced, demonstrating new possibilities for handling extremely low temperatures.
Start-ups introduce new impulses
Young companies contributed a range of innovative ideas. These included a sensor-equipped belt for respiratory training, a lighting and orientation system designed to prevent delirium in intensive care settings, and a shirt that supports posture correction. The diversity of these concepts highlighted the wide spectrum of smart textile applications across the entire value chain.
Platform for textile innovation and exchange
With its combination of presentations, demonstrations and direct dialogue, the Smart Textiles Forum provided a compact overview of current developments in intelligent textiles. The event once again illustrated the close collaboration between research institutions, companies and start-ups in advancing smart textile solutions.
