A coordinated stance across two regions

FITA, ABIT and EURATEX present a joint position on the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement. The associations from Argentina, Brazil and Europe describe the deal as essential for the competitiveness of their textile and apparel industries. They regard it as a signal of economic integration and a framework that offers more predictable conditions in a challenging global environment. Their support remains unchanged despite the agreement currently being reviewed by the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Industries with substantial economic weight

The statement outlines the scale of the textile and apparel sectors involved. In the European Union, the industry comprises about 200000 companies and 1.2 million workers, generating nearly EUR 170 billion in turnover. The Mercosur region reflects a similarly broad structure. Brazil counts 25700 companies with 1.3 million employees and a turnover of USD 40.9 billion. In Argentina, the textile and clothing sector includes 4000 companies and employs 540000 people along the value chain.

Opportunities highlighted in the agreement

According to the organisations, the Partnership Agreement creates opportunities in several areas: market access, technological cooperation, investment and the strengthening of environmental standards across both economic blocs. For decision-makers in the global textile supply chain, these elements provide clarity on long-term trade conditions and avenues for cross-regional collaboration.

Commitment to the implementation process

FITA, ABIT and EURATEX reaffirm their intention to support the agreement's implementation. They also plan additional actions that enhance the international visibility and positioning of both regions. For companies active in sourcing, manufacturing or trade between Europe and Mercosur, this continued engagement from industry organisations signals stable backing for a deal they describe as strategically important for the textile and apparel sector.
