Microplastics and Human Exposure

According to the press release, synthetic garments release tiny fragments when they are washed or worn. These particles do not break down and can enter water, soil and the air. Studies referenced in the release report the detection of microplastics in human organs such as the brain, kidneys, lungs and uterus. They also indicate that people may inhale or ingest between 74,000 and 121,000 particles per year. The conference will address these findings and discuss how they relate to fibres commonly used in the textile industry.

Insights from Research and Industry

The awareness initiative Plant Not Plastic will be presented as part of the programme. Marjory Walker, Vice President Council Operations at the National Cotton Council, will outline the background of the campaign. Dr Jesse Daystar of Cotton Incorporated will discuss material characteristics and research on natural fibres, including findings on degradation and particle behaviour mentioned in the release. Dr Richard Venditti from North Carolina State University will join Walker and Daystar to present and discuss the current state of work.

On-site and Online Participation

Participants may attend the conference in Bremen or follow the programme online. The main sessions will be accessible via the established digital platform. Networking tools are available to both on-site and online participants.

Organisers

The Bremen Cotton Exchange is hosting the conference. Founded in 1872, it presents itself as a neutral institution within the international cotton sector. The event brings together experts from different areas connected to cotton, with a clear focus on scientific and technical information as described in the release.
