Textile label “Green Button” set for further development
The Green Button is now one of Germany’s best-known textile labels. A new phase has begun to further develop this state-run scheme as a central instrument for sustainable textile supply chains.
Development Minister Reem Alabali-Radovan recently launched the next stage of the government label’s evolution at the “Green Button Summit”. Since its introduction in 2019, the label has set important benchmarks and has become widely recognised, with 54 licensed companies now participating.
At the Green Button Summit, representatives from business, civil society and producing countries came together to discuss the label’s future. Further consultations will follow over the coming months. The process will be supported by an independent five-member advisory board consisting of experts from science, industry, manufacturing countries, and human rights and environmental organisations.
The overall goal is to strengthen the Green Button as a key tool for sustainable textile supply chains and to prepare it for future challenges.
Reem Alabali-Radovan stated: “The Green Button stands for responsibility in the textile sector. It supports companies in making their supply chains more sustainable and in producing clothing that is both socially and environmentally responsible. We aim to move away from ultra-fast fashion and towards genuine sustainability and conscious consumption. Consumers should be confident that the brands they buy take responsibility for human rights and environmental standards. With this reorganisation, we are making the Green Button even more effective. It will continue to serve as the trusted mark for sustainable textiles.”
The revised programme will draw lessons from the initial implementation phase while placing even greater emphasis on environmental issues. The aim is to give companies clear and practical guidance for fulfilling their due diligence obligations. At the same time, the label will adopt a more international perspective. European and international companies are to be involved more closely, and partnerships in key production countries will be intensified.
The Green Button was the first certification scheme to operationalise and verify the concept of corporate due diligence in the textile sector.
